džulory ladžala: The Colour of your Shoes Matters

helloimlulu:

golden-zephyr:

In my dialect, there are two words for “light-skinned Rroma”.

Pharnavi - which means both grandmother and a “white” or “light-skinned” Rromani woman.

Themni - which means a foreign or strange woman, a non-Rromani woman, or a “white” or “light-skinned” Rromani woman.

So, even within my…

We use the word ‘svetlo’ to mean like…lightness in color. Or fair…but it also means light (color wise) for anything. A strange woman…is not used interchangeably with light skinned, that I know of. Since, strange woman is musafri. Musafri or tudzo…same difference kinda?

According to ROMLEX these words fit with Bugurdži Romani.

Bugurdži Romani belongs to the Balkan dialect group, more specifically the Northern Balkan group, sometimes also refered to as Drindari-Kalajdži-Bugurdži group. Bugurdži Romani is mainly spoken in Macedonia and Kosovo. Names also used to refer to this dialect are: Rabadži, Arabadži, and Kovač(k)i. The Bugurdži Romani glossary in ROMLEX consists of data from Macedonia and Kosovo.
