hey i’m tagging this with everything possible to try to get an answer, but which is the version used by outsiders and which is the version used by the actual people, romani or rromani? or is it rroma or roma?

cornerof5thandvermouth:

i kind of realized i may be Doing It Wrong and would like to not be a huge fuckup

thanks in advance

Rroma and Rromani

are the same as

Roma and Romani

I use Rroma for myself and other people (for example, I am Rroma, she is Rroma), but I would use Rromani to refer to the language (I speak Rromani). Sometimes I also use it for plural (they are Rromani). It’s pretty non-standard.

The double ‘r’ is transliterated from ř and is rolled a little like a Spanish ‘r’.

I use it because in my dialect Roma is spelled Řoma. However, in others it is simply Roma.

I know it’s confusing, but thanks for asking!

OH HEY PERSON WHO WAS ASKING IF THE R WAS ROLLED HERE’S YR ANSWER
  2. diaryofaromanifilmmaker answered: I use Romani because I am a British Romani (+white) but I call the Rroma Rroma. I don’t feel I deserve to be called Rroma.
  3. herpsandmanedwolves answered: While were on the subject, how would you define the word “gadje”? I’ve seen some think of it as a slur, and others as an innocent word.

Rroma and Rromani are the same as Roma and Romani I use Rroma for myself...other people...
  6. hanuueshe said: Also, I’d check out aj_rromale for info, as they are actually romani people.
  7. cakemeister answered: “The rr spelling is common particularly in Romania, in order to distinguish from the endonym for Romanians (sg. român, pl. români)” from wiki
  8. hanuueshe answered: It’s my understanding that Roma is a subgroup of Romani, and the double are is a matter of preferance when transliterating.
  9. chaje-shukarije answered: Rroma is like, a person. “She is a Rroma.” Rromani is an adjective, like “a Rromani wedding.” (Sorry if I’m wrong!)
  10. faerieeglow said: So naturally I use “Rroma” or “Rromani”.
  11. faerieeglow answered: Well, I lived with a Rroma-Russian girl for two years, she always spelled it “Rroma” and that’s what she called herself.
