Calo word of the day

Chaval, (pronounced; sha-val) means ‘son’ or ‘boy’. It is said to come from the English word, ‘Chav’ and is often used in some parts of Spain as a slang term among Spanish teenagers (Rroma and Gadje alike) to refer to a male friend.

lol, I might do one of these every day.

i’m like a dictionary.

In Gurbet Řomani

čhavo or čhařo (plural čhave).

In Lotfitka Řomani

čxāvo (čxāve) * where x is pronounced h (like Russian)

Yeah the English is Chav and the plural is Chavvies :D

Although chav is mainstream for a miscreant or poorly dressed person either male or female, it actually just means ‘boy’ in anglo-romany, although the plural can refer to both males and females.

Ah, i see i see! Unfortunately i don’t know all that much about other Romani dialects.. i just focus on Calo.

I need to read more about other dialects :3

I know nothing about Calo o.o

turns out I need to read about other dialects too :3

That’s why I thought of doing this… adding our respective dialects to each word :) Then we’ll understand the similarities and differences~

  3. remarkably said: I thought the English word ‘chav’ was supposed to come from Rromani usage in England, and not the other way around? I could be incorrect, though.

Chavo as well…and it’s used a lot in Mexico and a little less in other Spanish speaking countries.
