What is so wrong, may I ask, about being liking the romanticized version of your culture? It's like liking witches, the fantasy kind. People know the difference ( most people) because Rroma and "gypsies" as they know what a witch and a Wiccan is. I'm not trying to offend, but I read your post, and it shouldn't make you feel bad. No one is taking your voice, really.

-le sigh-

Most people do NOT know the difference between “Rroma” and “Gypsy” and believe the stereotyped hype that we wander, barefoot, through the fields, free as a cloud, living off the land.

That’s utter bullshit and it’s offensive that people think that’s what being Rroma is (though, 99% of people call us gypsies, which by the way is an offensive word).

Not to mention the fact that ‘gypsy’ has been stereotyped to erase the differences between our cultures. Not all people labeled under the ‘gypsy’ term are the same.

We are all different and have different names and practice different rituals, beliefs, languages, dances, eat different foods, wear different clothes, call our children by different names.

Yet, people think that we’re ALL the same.

Why?

Because of the romanticized and stereotyped trash that’s frequently displayed in relation to us.

YOU might thing it’s just like being Wiccan/Witches, but that’s actually a bit offensive too.

People CHOOSE to practice Wicca.

They make a CHOICE to do certain things and be a certain way.

An ethnicity is not a choice.

  5. littlegoldenapple said: I fully agree with what you said. And, not only is it offensive to compare religion to ethnicity (seriously, WTF), most people DON’T know the difference between “fantasy witches” and actual witches. So this is really all kinds of wrong.
