wewanttobe replied to your photo: Are you diddikai? (half)? Because I think you can…

British Romany people are Romanichal, no? Romanichal means children of the Rroma, I thought? We’re a branch which comes from the European Roma, most of my family are pale

Growing up, I was taught that these were all different.

Romanichal are Romani Chal (Romani children), but they have not remained a closed population. There have been marriages between Roma and Pavee and other walking groups, as well as gadje. Most Romanichal are lighter skinned.

Romany are not necessarily Romanichal and many Romany families consider themselves purer than Romanichal. Though, some families do call themselves both.

Where I lived Romanichal spoke Anglo-Romany, dropped into English sentence structure (often taking out only key words like “I rokkered with him”). Romany spoke Anglo-Romany without English.

But, I’m not sure if the distinctions are that strong anymore. I just know that to call a Romany, Romanichal was an insult… >.<

(Like my grandmother was called Romany (because she was dark Rroma), but she was not Romanichal)…

People were not called “Rroma” back then.
