Why don't you try to re-claim the word 'gypsy'? Instead of yelling that it's offensive, say "I'm gypsy and I'm proud!" instead of trying to get people to know a different word, show them that their assumptions are wrong via your actions.
I don’t “yell” that it’s offensive.
And, the fact is that it IS offensive and I am not ready to take that onto myself.
I recently had a large discussion with a mixed group of Rroma, Romanichal, and others who all said that they agreed with what I am saying here.
My great-grandmother had “Z” (for Zigeuner, the German word meaning gypsy) tattooed on her in a Nazi death camp. She was one of only a handful to survive.
You don’t understand the power behind that word and your telling me simply to “re-claim” it.
It was a word given to us by others, we don’t want it. We never did.
