It connotes this idea that I should be praising them, that I should be thankful they even bothered to give my grimy, brown, curry-stained culture a second glance.  You literally demand that I say thank you when you, in response to my displeasure, tell me, “It’s a compliment.”  Didn’t Barney teach you any manners when you were younger?  That shit is rude as hell.
